Abstract:
Every collection of subsets of a separable Banach space that is locally finite in the norm can be expanded to sets that are open in the weak topology that are also locally finite with respect to the norm. Little is known about what happens if separability is dropped: all Hilbert spaces have this property but $ell_infty$ does not have it.
